Why we should eat more seasonal vegetables

Why seasonality is so important

Although domestic cultivation in Germany would be possible without any problems, unfortunately fruit and vegetables are still imported in large quantities. That means the percentage of fruit self-sufficiency is around 22 percent - which is not exactly much.

Fortunately, it's more for vegetables - about 36 percentt. In the case of apples, it is almost more than half! Around 63 percent come from local cultivation. Excellent!

But: There's more! In order to protect the environment and resources long-term and sustainably, you should do as much as possible on < Set t4>regional products.

Another environmentally friendly aspect that we should all keep in mind: local products from your area automatically have a shorter path to the supermarket shelf than imported goods.

Longer transport routes entail high energy consumption and strain thereby the climate - especially during air transport.

If there is no other way and you need fruit or vegetables that you cannot buy regionally in the current season, then at least choose products from Southern Europe instead of overseas.

More reasons to choose seasonal fruit and vegetables:

  • The taste: Regional fruit and vegetables are usually ripe harvested. Due to the short transport routes, the products reach the dealers or your weekly market in a well-ripened condition. When it comes to imported goods, for example, tangerines taste best in winter, since November to March is the main harvest time in southern Europe.
  • The price: Regional fruit and vegetables, such as potatoes or apples, are usually cheaper than imported ones. It is even cheapest during the main harvest season, as there is a lot of harvested produce and the price remains low.
  • The vitamin content: Did you know that vitamins are lost at room temperature? Especially vitamins. This process is accelerated by a long transport route! That means, especially with imported goods, a lot falls by the wayside, as these are usually harvested before they are fully ripe and therefore before the absolute vitamin content.

    As a result, you value the first fresh strawberries much more as soon as summer arrives and you don't take them for granted winter to imported fruit.

How do I recognize regionality?

But what about processed goods?

The manufacturer does not indicate the origin of processed products, such as strawberry jam or dried fruit in muesli. The same applies to dairy products. Unfortunately, instead of the manufacturer, you often only find the note “made for” on the packaging and then the name of the supermarket.

What vegetables can I buy in winter?

Of course, in the winter months the selection of regional fruit and vegetables is logically a little smaller than in summer or autumn.

Nevertheless, in addition to seasonal fruit and vegetables, you also have the possibility of regional stock goods such as potatoes or try pumpkins.
